Ubiquitous Open Platform Forum
The Second Ordinary General Meeting of the UOPF
The vision of the Forumfs activities, progress in establishing specifications and some of the connection experiments will be presented.
The Ubiquitous Open Platform Forum (53 members as of April 1st, 2005) will hold its second ordinary general meeting at 13:30, today. Prior to the meeting, we will announce the Forumfs activity vision.
gSituations in establishing a series of forum specifications and guidelinesh and gsome of the interconnectivity experiments currently being conductedh will be released.
This forum specifications include technical specifications for realizing gDear-to-Dear* Visual Communication on TV,h which was established on the same day.
* Dear-to-Dear: A form of communication where home appliances are directly connected only with people who are familiar to, and specified to be connected by, the user.
- Vision for the Forumfs activities (Appendix 1)
The Forumfs vision is to introduce the new applications that the ginformation appliances powered by broadbandh make possible and to establish technological specifications and guidelines to realize them, thereby contributing to the production of goods. The Forum also plans to take various approaches to encourage the use of these information appliances and services in order to promote their dissemination. By announcing the Forumfs activity vision centered on the above two aims, we will accelerate the examination of application possibilities that can be provided using information appliances and broadband communication, with cooperation from Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. - Progress in establishing specifications and guidelines
Eight specifications and guidelines have been established by the work groups and four specifications have been disclosed to forum members (intended for affiliates) to facilitate examination of intellectual property related issues. These established specifications include those for realizing basic functions of gDear-to-Dear Visual Communication on TVh (Appendix 2).
Those specifications have been established by extending SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), the standard technology in IP telephony, for use in home appliances. By following the specifications, Internet Service Providers and consumer-electronics manufacturers can realize visual communication functions with high interconnectivity more easily and at a lower cost.
Today, we will disclose for the press some interconnectivity experiments conducted to examine these specifications. We will also demonstrate visual communication with TV equipment produced by different manufacturers, and will describe gDear-to-Dear Visual Communication on TV,h which is different from the communication provided by existing TV phones (Appendix 3). In the future, the Forum will continue to work toward commercialization of those appliances through examining specifications of optional functions, establishing mounting guidelines in various specifications, and so on.
