UOPF Joins in Home Networking Work Group
-Aiming at international standardization outcomes through UOPF activities-
Ubiquitous Open Platform Forum (UOPF: 55 member companies as of the end of March) has joined as an observer in the Home Networking Work Group in the research and development and standardization section of the Next Generation IP Network Promotion Forum.
UOPF has been working to establish an open common standard that provides user-friendly, easy, and safe information appliances powered by broadband regardless of specific ISPs or consumer-electronics manufacturers. UOPF has released the outcomes, such as technical specifications and reference guides, brought about by the effort. Currently, we have extended the original term of activities to establish the outcomes based on the redefined scope. All established outcomes (technical specifications and reference guides) will be released. After releasing the outcomes, we will start working to promote them.
The Home Networking Work Group (HNWG) was established in the research and development and standardization section of the Next Generation IP Network Promotion Forum* in November 2006 to focus on home network. HNWG has been developing the following activities:
| Main activities: | Promoting research and development Promoting international standardization Discussing promotion plan Discussing field test |
UOPF has decided to join HNWG as an observer** to promote international standardization of home networking in Japan, taking advantage of the outcomes (technical specifications and reference guides) from HNWG activities.
** A voluntary organization joining HNWG has an observer position.
□ Next Generation IP Network Promotion Forum
The information and communications network is showing rapid progress with the aim of promoting the IP system in networks. Interested parties from academic, business, and governmental circles gathered December 16, 2005 to engage in interconnectivity and field tests for the next generation IP network for comprehensive work and to promote research and development, standardization, and other such issues in a strategic manner. The approximately 190 members of the forum include individuals from universities or carriers, manufacturers, and application manufacturers.
□ Ubiquitous Open Platform Forum (UOPF)
UOPF was established by a group of 14 ISPs and consumer-electronics manufacturers on February 10, 2004. The aim was to provide user-friendly, easy, and safe information appliances powered by broadband regardless of specific ISP or consumer-electronics manufacturers from the user’s perspective and to create a new market. UOPF goals are as follows:
- To establish ubiquitous open platform (open common standard)
- To discuss the cooperation frame between users and application/contents providers to improve convenience for users
